Dedication to Paloma

Paloma young and vivacious

A good friend of mine passed away recently after a long and courageous fight against the big 'C.' She lived her life to the full, dancing, laughing, spending her summer days cycling to her favourite hidden rocky cove, 'Paloma's cove', escaping the tourists and revelling in her freedom. I still catch glimpses of her on her bicycle, free, her raucous laugh sounding out around her, her long curly hennaed hair flowing in the wind. That is how I will remember her, not the skeletal figure in those last difficult days, that wasn't Paloma. Fly free little dove. You will remain in my heart for eternity and I will offer a toast to you every year on our shared birthday, 20th October, wondering where you are and what mischief you are causing on the other side X

Tiny dove

Every day I sit and watch as you slowly slip away
I no longer ask why, apparently the universe decides who should live and who should die
Anger, sadness, acceptance, guilt…
I observe as you gradually wilt,
delicate as a flower, petals drop, one by one before your setting sun
Your flame that once shone so bright
Tough and feisty, would never surrender the fight, the fight to survive, the fight to love, the fight to be yourself, all you stood for…
Make love not war!
Oh how you swore, you’d fight till the end…
The flame flickers within your delicate form as I prepare to mourn for you
Tiny dove
Prepare to spread your wings and fly away free
Free from frailty, free from pain, your love for all eternity will remain, reign upon us X

Farewell Paloma. June 2019

Scattering Paloma's ashes in her favourite cove as the sun sets on her life.
